Many
Hands was a site specific piece created for the bell tower of
St Peter's church, Barton-upon-Humber for the Art at St. Peters
exhibition.
This
piece is the result of a process which involved photographing
the hands of local shoppers, store keepers and stall holders during
the Farmers Market in Barton on Humber, as well as approaching
other local people to have their dominant hand photographed. I
then asked participants to come up with a word or very short phrase
to describe the most significant thing that their hands
had done or felt that week.
Hands
are an expressive as well as useful part of the body, around which
many metaphors and associations may be made; they can communicate
a great deal about what a person is feeling and experiencing at
any given moment. This piece explores some of the relationships
that we have with ourselves and our environment through our hands
